Following, is a description that Jackie Gardener, the artist, wrote in a letter to me about the process of designing a book based on the lyrics to "The Wood Thrush's Song"(cover at left). Each book is hand-bound and signed by her in a limited edition of 50. The price for each book is $100. -Laurie
"As the design evolved, I used several artistic 'devices' to enhance my interpretation of your words. The two photos I used became my metaphor for 'before' and 'after' Man's embrace of the environment, slowly fading the leaves on the ground, representing prime habitat, to an increasingly visible shot of leaves reflected in a building, representing what we have left. The colored pencil scribbling behind your words is intended to mimic that habitat, making the reader search for words like the wood thrush searches for food, as well as searching for solutions. I added the description of the bird's nesting habits, parenting techniques and song/call notes to fill out the reader's understanding of this reclusive bird. But I refrained from coming to any conclusions about the predicament, hoping that each reader will work it out on their own.
The color and paper selections represent bird habitat and nature in general. I wrapped the introduction and the colophon at the end in Manila Hemp paper to separate your words from mine, and because it looked like nesting material the wood thrush might be attracted to. Lastly, I added this wonderful handmade red bronze leaf button to the spine as a finishing detail."
